Meditation training is like learning to read - once the preliminary components are understood and practiced, then meditation will bear gifts and benefits.
The primary components of meditation are peaceful abiding (shamatha), concentration (holding the mind in an acute manner), and aspiration. When utilized they lead to insight and penetrating clarity (vipassana) which results in a sustained blissful presence and peace (samadhi) for the practitioner.
Every aspect of learning to meditate or maturing an existing practice is a methodical unfolding (a Path) with mysterious and mystical experiences along the way.
This meditation retreat will use the thankga pictured above, entitled The Path of Meditation, as a tool for exploring your own path of meditation . This image, rendered hundreds of years ago by Buddhist meditation masters, signifies meditation, its training and its intended results. We will use it to offer insight into meditation as well as understanding the Path as a way of life. The imagery will be explained for the instruction it represents, and as a way to refine your meditation practice.
