FOCUSED ATTENTIONHave we been experiencing the breath or observing the breath? Have we been experiencing the mind or observing the mind? The answer is both.
Both experience and observation collect data; yet, they can feel markedly different. As we experience, we register information with our perceptions in a subjective way. The data we receive as the observer feels a bit more objective. Observing involves mindstuff: attention, intention, focus, concentration, and perhaps a bit of discernment along the way. Today we will practice holding the mind steady by using anchors such as the breath, sounds, or bodily sensations. The trick is discerning whether you are steadily observing the free-flow of data in the form of energy and information… or just plain drifting off into story land. |
